How To Pick A Winter Coat

With the thermometer showing lower temperatures across the country, how to keep warm during the winter months is on everyone’s mind.  Having the right wither coat can make the difference between being chilly or extremely cold.  Most people focus on the brand names, which can help because they tend to use more quality fabrics, however, there are other factors that come into play that make a quality coat for the winter.

fitSimple:

Fit:  Most people would not thing that fit would be significant in picking a winter coat, but I is a major factor.  The wrong fit, if to large, can allow extra space with lets heat escape.  This defeats the purpose of the coat.  The only time you would want extra space is if you plan to heavily layer, but with the right coat, you won’t need to layer to much.  To pick a coat that is close to the body, has a just enough room so your movement isn’t to restricted and you have found yourself a nice coat.

Sophisticated

Style:  To make a statement, style is always the easiest way to display your individuality.  With so many types, you can really be difficult to select a type.  Do you go rugged, or something more conservative?  That is up to you, however, there are a few that will work for any kind o man and will stand the test of time.

pea coatThe Pea Coat is a tried and tested classic.  Good enough for the military for decades, it holds a classic look that isn’t vintage and will keep any man warm in any weather.  The double-breasted look has stood the test of time, and helps with keeping yourself warm in almost any weather.  Unless in extreme weather, keep with a waist or ¾ length coat.  The look is remarkable better.

The Overcoat or Trench Coat is a classic look that keeps changing throughout the years, yet holds strong for any businessman.  Designed for being over a jacket or sports coat that provides a nice sleek look for a man, and with many adjustments over the years, there are a lot of options to choose from.  You pick the right one, and this will last over ten years.

The Insulated Coat is a more casual, yet worthy jacket for the wintertime.  The style you may choose may be quilted or tubed, but the warmth it provides is remarkable.

Don’t think that thicker is better here, there are plenty of insulated jackets by Arc’teryx that look like a lightly insulated jacket, however will keep you warm in temperatures well below -20 degrees.  Keeping your style on point and your temperature too.  Goose or duck down jackets are phenomenal to keep you warm.  Don’t think that they have to be puffy to keep you warm.

Classic

fabricFabric: Probably one of the most overlooked factors in picking a wither coat is the fabric of the coat.  The right fabrics can keep you warm when you need it to count.  Cashmere and wool are the best fabrics for coats.  If you are in harsher weather, wool, or a cashmere wool blend is your best bet.  It holds stronger in against the elements, especially sleet and snow.

Cashmere is great for those days or places or times where its really cold, but not a lot of exposure to the elements.   With the thin amount of fabric you need, it hold remarkably well in cold weather.  It is expensive, but with the right care, will last decades.
