Fall Fabrics 2012:

Colder weather bring warmer fabrics to the forefront, and this year there are some great fabrics that you should know about, especially if you are on a budget, to help you get through the winter in style.

Simple: Flannel
Normally in plaid patterns, flannel is making its presence known this fall and winter season with plenty of really nice options from different companies.  Plaid is a pattern that allows for a more colorful presentation, while still giving a casual feel and perfect for business casual events. J.Crew and Club Monaco have the best quality for the price.  Gap and Express also have alternatives at a great price point.  If you can get your hands on flannel sheets or pajamas.  You will never regret it.

Sophisticated: Wool
The most traditional fall and winter fabric besides cotton, wool has evolved into the perfect material for your fall fashion vault. Merino wool is preferred because it is softer than most wool, breathes extremely well, and can keep you warm with the least amount of weight.  Moreover it doesn't have the itchy feel that most wool gives, and absorbs odor really well. J Crew and Banana Republic have a great selection of styles, colors and patterns for merino wool sweaters at a reasonable price.  the best thing for solid colors is to wait until they go on sale at the end of the season for next year.  No worries, they will still be in style.  The higher quality wool is lambswool.  This is more expensive, but extremely soft, smooth and resilient.  Being more impressive, you will see lambswool with items that are closer to the body such as undergarments and thermals.  The best part is that it is the most hypoallergenic of all wools, so for those who need it, purchase that.  The best selection this season is from J Crew.  They have really stepped up their selection this year, especially with cardigans.

Classic: Tweed
A Scottish material that is rough but became fashionable because of Chanel’s embrace to include it in suits.  This material isn't cheap because its mostly handmade.  You will see this mostly with jackets and sports coats, yet more modernly in hats, ties and some cases cardigans.  Zara is your best bet for accessories, while Banana Republic is best for clothing.

Bonus: Velvet
If you want to make an impression, velvet is the way to go.  There is nothing like a man wearing a velvet coat to an evening affair.  Hold up now, not everyone can wear velvet, just like not anyone can wear the fragrance Declaration by Cartier.  Wearing velvet is something to do with confidence.  The double-faced fabric and unique feel allow for a classic look that attracts the right attention, so that the person wearing must be able to handle it.  The best part about velvet is that its fairly inexpensive and adds a level to your attire.  The best places I have found this at a great price is surprisingly Macy’s.  They have had the best so far over the years.  Zara and J Crew have a great selection in colors and accessories for a reasonable price.
